How to choose?
Here are the differences:
Vector Images (‘Raster' Images’)
-Preferred format for logos, the MOST versatile format
-Can easily be scaled to ANY size with no loss of image quality
-Contain areas of bold/solid color
-Have small/compact file sizes
-May contain a set number of colors (if needed by embroiderers, screen printers, etc.)
-Generally contain less shading, colors and detail than digitally painted images
-Generally preferred by embroiderers, digitizers, and screen printers*
Vector file formats include: AI, EPS, and PDF (depending on how the PDF file is saved)
-Have more of a 'hand painted' look - in-spite of being created on the computer
-Can contain limitless amounts of colors, like a photograph can
-Are best for display artwork, or artwork being digitally printed
-Must be created at the largest size needed, increasing file size
-Will become blurry if enlarged too much past the original size
-Are not recommended if screen printing or embroidery is desired*
Raster file formats include: JPG, JPEG, BMP & TIFF
*If image/s will be embroidered, digitized, and/or screen printed:
Be sure to consult with your embroiderer, digitizer, and/or screen printer to confirm what file
type/s they prefer and how many colors they they can work with before a project is started -
their requirements and capabilities may differ from vendor to vendor.
NOTE: Dogworks by Molly Yang does not offer digitizing, screen printing, or embroidery services -
but will be happy to work with you and your selected vendor/s to meet their required specifications during the
artwork creation process. If you don’t have a specific vendor in mind, we can assist with that as well.
Are you requesting a logo design?
-I always recommend going with a VECTOR logo for maximum versatility for logos
-If you love the look of a digitally painted logo (or would like to include actual
photographs in the logo); this CAN be done, but will need to be in RASTER format*
*I always schedule a consultation call to discuss logo projects in more detail; the more info I have
regarding your ideas for the design - the better I’ll be able to guide you in the right direction.
Is your design limited to a set number of colors?
VECTOR is the way to go!
Will the completed design contain one or more photographs?
Images containing photographs (or elements of photographs)
will always be created in RASTER format
Are you requesting a portrait, artwork for display, or a book illustration?
-Both styles work great for these purposes! Choose your favorite!
-Have a look through my artwork galleries to see all the possibilities
